With the end of the year fast approaching, there are likely a few to-dos on your plate before you ring in 2023. Remember, as an employee, you are responsible for your information being correct with your company’s HR department – especially if any life changes occurred throughout the year that you might not have thought to report.
The most important thing you need to do is make sure that all your tax information is up-to-date and accurate. Mistakes could lead to penalties and misfiled W-2s when tax season rolls around.
Verify that the following personal information is accurate:
o Name
o Address
o Social Security Number
o Tax Information
Make any updates due to status changes:
o Marriage
o Divorce
o Dependents
o Did you move? If so:
Are the state and local taxes being withheld?
Did you update your address?
Confirm what benefits you currently have (and what will or won’t carry into the new year):
o PTO/vacation time calculation – check your balance and your company’s roll-over policy
o 401(k) – confirm you have not over/under contributed
o FSA – make sure you have spent the money in your account before the end of the year (or the grace period), or else you’ll lose any money you or your employer contributed
If there are discrepancies, let your HR team know so they can update what's needed on their end or answer any questions you may have before it’s too late. Remember, you are responsible for initiating any necessary changes to your personal information and making sure you utilize your benefits.
In a lot of cases, it’s “use it or lose it” – so make sure you don’t miss out!
